Volunteers of America Colorado (VOAC) provides vital supports for older adults across the state, offering programs that promote health, independence, and community connection. Their aging and nutrition services programs focus on improving access to nutritious food and supportive services for seniors.

One of their core offerings includes congregate meal programs, which provide older adults with freshly prepared, nutritious meals served in community dining settings—helping reduce food insecurity while fostering social engagement and reducing isolation. Their broader services for seniors also include transportation assistance, wellness programming, and other supports designed to uplift dignity, independence, and overall well‑being.

Additionally, VOAC is dedicated to supporting vulnerable individuals and families through a wide range of human service programs —including housing and emergency shelters, hunger and nutrition programs, and community support initiatives—to nearly 100,000 Coloradans offering tailored support for older adults, families, veterans, and individuals experiencing homelessness.

The DFM-CEP-MM features presenters from community organizations, partners, and colleagues in DFM and across the Campus who work in areas of community engagement, and activities that promote access and healthy outcomes. Everyone is welcome. See our website.

The day will include a keynote talk from Liisa Galea, Professor Department of Psychiatry and Pharmacology and Toxicology, University of Toronto. Dr. Galea will show that not all estrogens influence brain plasticity equally, that pregnancy history influences how the brain reacts to estrogens in mid-life, and these findings may help understand why menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) findings are equivocal on brain health in menopausal females. To understand complex brain disorders, such as those surrounding mental health, it is important to recognize diversity in our pre- and clinical modelling to lead to better health outcomes for all.

Dr. Gregory Way is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics at the University of Colorado Anschutz, where he leads the Way Lab. He earned his Ph.D. in Genomics and Computational Biology from the University of Pennsylvania and completed postdoctoral training at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, where he worked within the Imaging Platform to advance large-scale image-based profiling approaches. Dr. Way’s research sits at the intersection of biomedical data science, high-content microscopy, and systems biology. He develops open-source computational tools to extract biologically meaningful insights from large-scale imaging experiments, with a particular focus on accelerating drug discovery and improving treatments for aggressive pediatric cancers. A leader in the Cytomining ecosystem and an advocate for sustainable, reproducible research software, his work bridges cutting-edge machine learning with translational biomedical research to turn complex cellular phenotypes into actionable therapeutic strategies.

Honoring a Legacy Rooted in Our Own Campus
Our campus sits on the historic grounds of the former Fitzsimons General Hospital, established in 1918 specifically to treat soldiers suffering from tuberculosis and respiratory diseases following World War I. The facility rapidly expanded into 86 buildings with capacity for 1,400 patients and became the largest tuberculosis hospital in the United States, pioneering modern TB treatments that emphasized sunshine, fresh air, and therapeutic rest. By 1941, Fitzsimons opened its iconic Main Hospital Building—designed to be the most modern TB treatment center in the nation—and it continued serving soldiers and veterans with respiratory illness for decades. Today, this same historic site is home to the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, continuing its legacy of advancing care and research in pulmonary and infectious diseases, and remaining a leader in tuberculosis research.

Dr. Brooks's area of expertise is in antiviral pharmacology, with a specific research focus on clinical pharmacology and drug disposition. Her work aims to optimize safe and effective medication use in persons living with HIV, particularly vulnerable populations such as infants, children, adolescents, and pregnant people. When she is not teaching, she conducts translational research through the Colorado Antiviral Pharmacology Laboratory to help bring a better understanding of disease treatment from the bench to the bedside.

About:
Today, the U.S. health care system wastes about $1.1T per year, or 5% of the nation’s GDP. A sizeable fraction of this waste has been attributed to sources that involve poorly informed or incented clinical decisions (Berwich, 2012; Shrank et al 2019). The broad goal of the Johns Hopkins Intelligent Healthcare (Hopkins inHealth) project is to test the potential for reducing a part of this waste by clearly communicating relevant statistical evidence to a clinician and patient at each major decision. Specifically, inHealth seek to better inform answers to the following clinical questions: what is this patient’s current disease state and trajectory; is this patient a member of a clinical subgroup for which treatment has been tailored; among the available treatments, which has the optimal expected outcome?

Using examples, this talk will cover essential informatics infrastructure to improve health care; a role for Bayesian hierarchical models and machine learning analogues; and the challenges of communicating statistical evidence to clinicians and patients within the EHR workflow. Opportunities for statistical and data scientists to improve patient outcomes while reducing waste will be highlighted.

Who are we?

We are a patient advocacy/advisory council comprised of cancer survivors, family members, and caregivers from across Colorado. COE-CARES is sponsored by the CU Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, and aims to help investigators in the basic sciences, clinical, translational, and population based research areas who seek input from community members as advisors or advocates for new grants and/or on-going research studies.

About the Presenter:

David Bentley (BA, PhD, Cambridge University with Terry Rabbitts, postdoctoral fellow with Hal Weintraub, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center) is professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics and was co-director of the RNA Bioscience Initiative (2016-2022) at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. He previously held group leader positions at the Amgen Institute University of Toronto (1995-1998) and Cancer Research UK (1987-1995). Bentley’s research in mechanisms that control gene expression has focused on two topics: 1) control of transcription by RNA polymerase II at the steps of elongation and termination of RNA chains; and 2) integration of different steps in mRNA biogenesis through coupling mechanisms that coordinate transcription with co-transcriptional pre-mRNA maturation and chromatin modification. Bentley’s “mRNA factory” model, which proposed that coupling works by direct binding of mRNA processing factors to the C-terminal domain of actively transcribing RNA polymerase II, has stimulated an active area of research.

About the Award:

The Chancellor’s Distinguished Research Lectureship Award is presented annually to two CU Anschutz faculty members in recognition of their extraordinary research accomplishments. The award recipients each present a lecture to the CU Anschutz campus community to showcase their impactful and innovative research.

This event brings together clinicians, ethicists, and scholars to examine complex ethical questions that arise in end-of-life care but often receive limited attention in clinical training and discussion. Through a series of expert presentations, this program will explore ethical challenges related to determinations of non-beneficial treatment, physician proxy decision-making, and the uncertainty that frequently accompanies serious illness prognoses. Speakers will also address the ethical dimensions of caring for vulnerable older adults, strategies for communicating difficult news to patients and families, and the responsibilities clinicians hold in honoring cultural and personal death rituals. Together, these discussions aim to deepen participants’ understanding of ethically grounded, compassionate care at the end of life.

Literally hundreds of risk models have been derived and validated for heart failure. Such models work reasonably well for describing the risk of mortality among populations of patients. However, risk models have major limitations when applied to individual patients in the course of clinical care. Clinicians must help patients anticipate the transition into end-stage disease, a time of increasing disease burden and major medical decisions. Risk models can provide some help in predicting clinical course, but clinicians must also integrate multiple possible outcomes, recognize uncertainty, and incorporate patient goals and preferences.

Following the lecture, students are invited to join Larry for a one-hour informal discussion to continue exploring these themes and to ask additional questions.

We are a patient advocacy/advisory council comprised of cancer survivors, family members, and caregivers from across Colorado. COE-CARES is sponsored by the CU Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, and aims to help investigators in the basic sciences, clinical, translational, and population based research areas who seek input from community members as advisors or advocates for new grants and/or on-going research studies.

This talk will discuss several key steps in the theranostic clinical trial workflow:

(i) Imaging phase: Patients receive a low-dose radiotracer that targets a specific oncoprotein.
(ii) Selection phase: If the PET scan shows target uptake (oncotarget positive), the patient is enrolled in the therapeutic phase.
(iii) Therapeutic phase: The same targeting molecule is paired with a higher-energy, cell-killing radioisotope or radioseed.

The discussion will also highlight unique aspects of theranostic trials, including patient selection, dosimetry optimization, collection and handling of radioactive blood for pharmacokinetic analysis, and potential toxicities.

Linda S. Cook, PhD:
Dr. Cook received her PhD in epidemiology from the University of Washington in Seattle and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer epidemiology at Fred Hutch Cancer Center in Seattle. She is a professor of epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health in Aurora and associate director for population sciences at the University of Colorado Cancer Center in Aurora.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Cook has had extensive experience as a population-based cancer epidemiologist, leading multisite projects, de novo biospecimen collection, de novo medical record and EHR data extraction, detailed surveys and interviews, and participating in collaborative research groups such as the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium, the Ovarian Tumor Tissue Analysis Consortium, the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium, and the NCI Cancer Center Cessation Initiative.

Dr. Cook is the MPI/PD of the NCI Cancer Screening Research Network: Accrual, Enrollment, and Screening Sites Hub, known as Improving Strategies for Cancer Reduction Through Early Detection and Engagement (I-SCREEN) (NCI 1 UG1 CA286941). The I-SCREEN Hub is participating in the Vanguard study, a national randomized controlled trial testing multicancer detection tests.

Victoria Nuanes, CCRC:
Victoria Nuanes earned her bachelor’s degree in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology from the University of Colorado Boulder. Inspired after taking a “Biology of a Cancer Cell” course, she has dedicated her career to contributing to the field of oncology clinical research.

Over the past eight years at the CU Cancer Center, Nuanes has held roles as a clinical research coordinator, clinical research supervisor, and, most recently, program manager for the Cancer Screening Research Network. Working in collaboration with investigators and research staff, she has successfully onboarded and opened five recruiting sites for the CSRN’s pilot Vanguard study.

She enjoys working in cross-functional settings, establishing logical process flows, and serving as a trial matter expert. She strongly believes increased cancer screening and preventive measures are key to fighting cancer. Outside of work, she enjoys fishing, spending time with her husband and dog, and caring for her houseplants.

Who are we?

We are a patient advocacy/advisory council comprised of cancer survivors, family members, and caregivers from across Colorado. COE-CARES is sponsored by the CU Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, and aims to help investigators in the basic sciences, clinical, translational, and population based research areas who seek input from community members as advisors or advocates for new grants and/or on-going research studies.

Input and feedback on research study materialsGuidance on how to enhance participant enrollment from diverse groupsGuidance on disseminating and sharing research findings with communitiesGrant review supportAccess to patient advocates who can work with investigators for new grantsubmissions that require advocates (e.g. DoD, PCORI grants)Please contact Sindy Gonzalez, Program Coordinator, if you'd like to present during one of our monthly meetings. Target Audience: Physicians, Pediatricians, Advanced Practice Providers, Pharmacists, Nurses, Nursing Students, Respiratory Therapists, EMS Providers, Social Workers and other interested pediatric healthcare providers. Learners will report new knowledge and skills in navigating ethical challenges that occur during the care of pediatric patients.

Global Objectives:

Review case examples and discuss ethical frameworks for challenging cases.Discussion of ethical analysis, reasoning and reflection to increase skills and engage in strategies to prevent or resolve conflict. Provide timely and relevant education content in an evidence and outcomes-based manner that will be impactful to pediatric care. Review ethical frameworks that can assist learners in identifying and navigating complex ethical issues.Learner Outcome

After attending this event, participants will report increased knowledge and intent to change practice when navigating ethical challenges that occur during the care of pediatric patients.
