Come and learn about how community members and clinic patients can access education and coaching designed to help them and their family build healthier lifestyles and reduce their risk of chronic disease.

We welcome Maritza Orozco-Reyes, our guest presenter, who will tell us about these free programs that support diabetes prevention and diabetes management.

The Journey to Wellness program provides long-term support for healthy eating, physical activity, weight management, stress reduction, and behavior change to help prevent diabetes and heart disease. For individuals living with diabetes, the Diabetes Self-Empowerment program offers group education and support focused on blood sugar management, symptom reduction, increased energy, and improving overall quality of life. Classes are available virtually and in-person in English and Spanish, and personalized coaching to help participants reach their health goals.

The DFM-C3E-MM features presenters from community organizations, partners, and colleagues in DFM and across the Campus who work in areas of community engagement, and activities that promote access and healthy outcomes. Everyone is welcome. See our website.

Maritza Orozco-Reyes (she/her/ella), RDN, Certified Diabetes Care & Education Specialist, Adams County Health Department

Maritza is a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist (CDCES) based in Colorado. She specializes in diabetes prevention, diabetes management, and practical nutrition education that supports long-term lifestyle change. She focuses on translating evidence-based nutrition recommendations into realistic strategies that people can apply in their everyday lives.

As a bilingual educator fluent in both English and Spanish, Maritza is passionate about improving access to culturally relevant nutrition and diabetes education for diverse communities. Her work emphasizes empowerment, behavior change, and helping individuals build confidence in managing their health.

Join experts Patricia Huguelet, MD, and Lauryn Roth, MD, as they discuss the impacts of dysmenorrhea on adolescent quality of life, discuss treatment options, and address when a higher level of care may be necessary.

You can expect to learn the following:

Discuss the prevalence of dysmenorrhea and the impact on adolescent quality of lifeReview efficacy of hormonal and non-hormonal therapiesUnderstand when to consider secondary causes of dysmenorrhea, including endometriosis, and when to recommend gynecology referral Feel free to submit questions to our panel in advance. The Health Outcomes & Member Engagement (HOME) Committee is excited to welcome Kate Okojie (she/her), Chaplain at UCHealth University Hospital as part of the Colorado Child Health Research Institute's HOME speaker series! This session is for any child health clinical research team member interested in developing emotionally intelligent and trauma-informed communication skills, learning about the ways in which bias and other healthy equity barriers influence communication with pediatric populations, and identifying meaningful ways to balance challenging emotional work with personal resilience.

Come to the 14th Annual CU-CSU Summit, on Thursday, August 13, 2026. The conference will take place in the Elliman Conference Center in the Anschutz Health Sciences Building at CU Anschutz.

This daylong academic conference will include presentations on exciting translational research approaches to brain health, chronic disease, neuroimmunology, and more. Presenters will hail from a diversity of departments and disciplines across the state of Colorado. The goal of the CU-CSU Summit is to foster new collaborations across all CCTSI-affiliated campuses (CU Anschutz, CU Boulder, CU Denver and Colorado State University) and across different research areas.

Early stage investigators and trainees are encouraged to attend along with senior scientists and faculty.

This talk will discuss several key steps in the theranostic clinical trial workflow:

(i) Imaging phase: Patients receive a low-dose radiotracer that targets a specific oncoprotein.
(ii) Selection phase: If the PET scan shows target uptake (oncotarget positive), the patient is enrolled in the therapeutic phase.
(iii) Therapeutic phase: The same targeting molecule is paired with a higher-energy, cell-killing radioisotope or radioseed.

The discussion will also highlight unique aspects of theranostic trials, including patient selection, dosimetry optimization, collection and handling of radioactive blood for pharmacokinetic analysis, and potential toxicities.

Using a sequential mixed‑methods research design, the study assesses how well CalAIM supports care integration for individuals with complex health and social needs, with a specific focus on Black, Indigenous, LatinX, and other communities of color. Research activities include surveys of community organizations across 20 California counties, complemented by in‑depth case studies in five counties.

Conducted by the University of California, San Francisco, in collaboration with 211 San Diego, United Way local affiliates, Health Leads, and other community partners, this webinar will share insights, implementation lessons, and implications for advancing equity-driven Medicaid reform.

Join fellow cancer center mentored members as they connect across disciplines to advance innovative cancer research, early detection, multidisciplinary care, and education in the shared mission to prevent and conquer cancer.

Up to $10,000 in pilot grant funding will be awarded based on interdisciplinary project outlines developed during the Forum.

Linda S. Cook, PhD:
Dr. Cook received her PhD in epidemiology from the University of Washington in Seattle and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer epidemiology at Fred Hutch Cancer Center in Seattle. She is a professor of epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health in Aurora and associate director for population sciences at the University of Colorado Cancer Center in Aurora.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Cook has had extensive experience as a population-based cancer epidemiologist, leading multisite projects, de novo biospecimen collection, de novo medical record and EHR data extraction, detailed surveys and interviews, and participating in collaborative research groups such as the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium, the Ovarian Tumor Tissue Analysis Consortium, the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium, and the NCI Cancer Center Cessation Initiative.

Dr. Cook is the MPI/PD of the NCI Cancer Screening Research Network: Accrual, Enrollment, and Screening Sites Hub, known as Improving Strategies for Cancer Reduction Through Early Detection and Engagement (I-SCREEN) (NCI 1 UG1 CA286941). The I-SCREEN Hub is participating in the Vanguard study, a national randomized controlled trial testing multicancer detection tests.

Victoria Nuanes, CCRC:
Victoria Nuanes earned her bachelor’s degree in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology from the University of Colorado Boulder. Inspired after taking a “Biology of a Cancer Cell” course, she has dedicated her career to contributing to the field of oncology clinical research.

Over the past eight years at the CU Cancer Center, Nuanes has held roles as a clinical research coordinator, clinical research supervisor, and, most recently, program manager for the Cancer Screening Research Network. Working in collaboration with investigators and research staff, she has successfully onboarded and opened five recruiting sites for the CSRN’s pilot Vanguard study.

She enjoys working in cross-functional settings, establishing logical process flows, and serving as a trial matter expert. She strongly believes increased cancer screening and preventive measures are key to fighting cancer. Outside of work, she enjoys fishing, spending time with her husband and dog, and caring for her houseplants.

The training curriculum will focus on the highest yield POCUS exams for generalist providers caring for hospitalized patients. Interactive didactic sessions will underscore how POCUS can be applied to many common clinical scenarios that arise in the general medicine wards. Participants will learn to obtain images of the heart, lungs, abdominal organs, and vascular structures and practice interpretation of normal and abnormal images with a discussion of how to integrate POCUS findings into clinical decision-making appropriately. Participants will also learn best practices of ultrasound-guided techniques for bedside procedures such as thoracentesis, central venous access, lumbar puncture, and paracentesis.

This program helps students and postdocs prepare and submit successful applications to the NIH for their individual NRSA (F30, F31, F32) fellowships. We provide an informational workshop, some one-on-one advising to applicants who are preparing fellowship applications, and a pre-submission mock grant review. Participants for this program will receive insight into the grant review process, hear discussions of the applications by local reviewers, and receive written reviews. Participants will get this feedback in time to incorporate suggestions and make revisions before their submission of the final proposal to NIH. All participants receiving reviews are required to attend the mock study section.

Who is eligible?

Any PhD student, MD/PhD student, or Postdoctoral Fellow on CU Anschutz Campus, CU-Boulder Campus or Colorado State University (CSU) planning to submit a Pre-F level NRSA Fellowship.

PRIME POCUS is a primary care–focused ultrasound education initiative dedicated to expanding access to practical, evidence-based point-of-care ultrasound training for Family Medicine and Primary Care Clinicians. Join us for an engaging Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) Workshop (flyer attached, for sharing) designed specifically for primary care clinicians interested in building practical bedside ultrasound skills. This hands-on educational experience will provide participants with foundational POCUS training applicable to everyday outpatient and inpatient clinical practice. The workshop is offered through a collaboration with Plains to Peaks, the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill Department of Family Medicine, and the University of Colorado Department of Family Medicine, bringing together expert faculty and evidence-based instruction. Participants will have opportunities for live scanning, small-group learning, and skill development tailored to clinicians across varying levels of ultrasound experience.

Beyond hands-on workshops, PRIME POCUS also offers a growing range of educational and faculty development opportunities designed to support long-term POCUS integration in primary care. These offerings include network memberships that provide access to asynchronous educational content, mentorship, implementation support, discounted workshops, and a collaborative learning community. PRIME is also developing longitudinal faculty development programs featuring virtual learning, mentorship, competency assessment, and progressive hands-on training to help clinicians build durable ultrasound skills over time. This multisector collaboration brings together several systems, including a local food bank, a Medicaid-supported community health worker HUB, Mom’s First (supported by public health), and academic researchers. The study evaluates how coordinated support across these partners can improve maternal health and household food access.

The two-group intervention S4A study compares:

Medically tailored groceries, customized to each household’s dietary needs and preferences and delivered every other week, and$30 in cash, distributed every other week via CashApp.Outcomes from these two approaches will be compared with each other and with a concurrent matched sample drawn from local Medicaid data. Key data collection points include baseline, 8 weeks after the intervention begins, at or near delivery, and 3 months postpartum.

This webinar will highlight the study design, implementation across community and health systems, and early insights into how food- and cash-based supports may influence maternal and household health during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

Who are we?

We are a patient advocacy/advisory council comprised of cancer survivors, family members, and caregivers from across Colorado. COE-CARES is sponsored by the CU Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, and aims to help investigators in the basic sciences, clinical, translational, and population based research areas who seek input from community members as advisors or advocates for new grants and/or on-going research studies.

Lifespan Approaches to Aging: Integrating Sex Differences

Held in Colorado every other year, this conference brings together scientists and thought leaders from around the world to share emerging and cutting-edge findings on women’s health and sex differences across the lifespan.

The 3-day meeting offers unparalleled opportunities for senior investigators and early-career scientists alike to learn about current research, make strategic connections, and contribute to discovery and innovation in women's health and sex differences research. This two-day intensive will immerse attendees in the rapidly-evolving field of public health law, with particular attention to practical skills in legal, policy, and ethical analysis. Sessions will focus on recent changes in the state and federal landscape of public health law and policy, including conversations about the role of artificial intelligence, exploration of the ethical conditions under which the current system is operating and a focus on how to evaluate the impacts of policy decisions in a constantly shifting environment. The intensive will provide a unique focus on integration of skills in legal and ethical analysis with practical work in policy processes (policy formation, evidence-based policy translation, policy analysis, etc.).

Intended for public health lawyers, public and government lawyers, public health professionals, trainees, clinicians, health policy professionals, advocates, bioethicists, health care attorneys, and anyone involved in public health practice and leadership.

Razelle Kurzrock, MD, FACP

Director of the Center for Precision Oncology and Rare Cancers, Professor of Medicine and Chair of Precision Oncology, Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center

Kurzrock is a world-renowned leader in precision oncology and rare cancer research. She serves as associate director of clinical research for the Medical College of Wisconsin Cancer Center, associate director of precision oncology at the Linda T. and John A. Mellowes Center for Genomic Sciences and Precision Medicine, and founding director of the Michels Rare Cancers Research Laboratories at the MCW Cancer Center. She has been recognized as one of the world’s 25 most important voices in precision medicine and among the most highly cited scientists globally. She has authored more than 950 scientific and medical publications.

Kurzrock chairs the Early Therapeutics and Rare Cancers Committee for SWOG NCI, one of the nation’s largest clinical trials cooperative groups, and has served as principal investigator for more than 100 early-phase clinical trials, contributing to the FDA approval of eight drugs. In 2022, Kurzrock and the DART rare cancer study team received the National Cancer Institute Director’s Award of Merit for outstanding work.

As the S4A program sunsets on December 31, this webinar offers a final look at the program’s impact and contributions. Through 54 funded studies and more than 1,000 proposals submitted across nine Calls for Proposals, S4A research has explored innovative systems alignment mechanisms -- processes designed to coordinate and integrate medical, social, and public health systems to improve population health and advance equity. These studies have shed light on system-level drivers of cross-sector collaboration and the innovations that make alignment possible.

Join S4A Director Dr. Glen Mays for a reflective conversation on the program’s final results, key insights, and lasting lessons. Who are we?

We are a patient advocacy/advisory council comprised of cancer survivors, family members, and caregivers from across Colorado. COE-CARES is sponsored by the CU Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, and aims to help investigators in the basic sciences, clinical, translational, and population based research areas who seek input from community members as advisors or advocates for new grants and/or on-going research studies.
