At the CCTSI, we believe that one of the best ways to increase support for science is to empower researchers with the skills to communicate what it is they do and why it is important—to a variety of non-science audiences.

This workshop series provides an overview of why and how to engage the public—everyone from reporters to your neighbor—and even with the world on social media. Before each interactive workshop session, you will set yourself up for success through brief readings, a video or two to view, and a mini assignment. Dr. Sunita Sharma is a physician scientist in the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine and the Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Mentorship for the Department of Medicine at University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. She is the co-Director for the University of Colorado Asthma Research and Education (UCARE) program working clinically with severe asthma patients and also participates in asthma clinical and translational research. Her research focuses on the use of genetics and genomics technologies to understand the biological mechanisms of asthma susceptibility and disease severity.
Through her work with the Health Equity and Diversity Committee of the American Thoracic Society (ATS), Dr. Sharma helped to develop the first mentorship program for underrepresented individuals in medicine for the ATS. She has also served as a mentor to numerous medical students, residents, and faculty at her own institution. As the VC for Faculty Development, she is collaborating with an incredible group of faculty to develop mentorship and career development programs for the Department of Medicine.

“Healing the hurt on both sides of the gun: Lived experiences of gun violence in an urban center in the Rocky Mountain West of the United States”

About the webinar:

In this talk, the presenters will discuss interviews conducted and analyzed by Violence Prevention Professionals (VPPs) with the At-Risk Intervention and Mentoring (AIM) program. These interviews focused on the landscape of gun violence in an urban setting by asking individuals who have experienced gun violence and perpetrated it. We will highlight the challenges, solutions, and healing at the personal, environmental, and systems-level. These findings will demonstrate the complexity of gun violence beyond what is noted in traditional academic research. We will also discuss the importance of community-led research to provide depth to difficult to study topics.

Virginia McCarthy, DrPH mDIV

Dr. Virginia McCarthy is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado. Dr. McCarthy also serves as the Director of REACH clinic, a community clinic focused on serving individuals in the Denver and Aurora area. She is also an affiliate faculty with FIPI. Dr. McCarthy’s research focuses on advancing community-led research and community violence intervention.

Johnnie Williams
Johnnie Williams is the Executive Director of Denver Youth Program, which orchestrates many programs, including the At-Risk Intervention and Mentoring (AIM) hybrid hospital-based violence intervention program (HVIP), the Gang Rescue and Support Project (GRASP). Johnnie joined GRASP in July of 2008 and has worked with youth for over 25 years, providing constructive alternatives to gangs and other destructive activities that result from and contribute to a cycle of hopelessness among youth. Johnnie facilitates support groups and healing circles, manages a city-wide black and brown unity council, and leads the only hospital-based violence intervention program in the Rocky Mountain West. Johnnie is a subject matter expert in crisis intervention, group facilitation, child abuse prevention, life skills training, and violence prevention, serving as a criminal justice specialist and an addictions counselor. Johnnie leverages positive youth development at the service of what he believes to be the most rewarding outcome of his work: supporting youth as they change their lives for the better, becoming the fullest version of themselves.

Benjamin Li, MD MSc
Dr. Benjamin Li is an emergency physician at Denver Health and the medical director for the AIM’s Denver Health site. He is an assistant professor with the University of Colorado School of Medicine and is an affiliate faculty with FIPI. Dr. Li’s research focuses on hospital- and community-based violence intervention and prevention.

Quintin W.O. Myers, PhD
Dr. Quintin Myers is an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at the University of Colorado and the evaluator for the At-Risk intervention and mentoring program. He is also an affiliate faculty with FIPI. Dr. Myers’ research focuses on the prevention of firearm violence among adolescents with an emphasis on the intersection of social media and firearm obtainment.

Catherine G. Velopulos, MD MHS
Dr. Catherine Velopulos is a trauma surgeon and professor of surgery at the University of Colorado and a FIPI affiliate faculty member. Dr. Velopulos is the medical director for AIM’s UCHealth site. Dr. Velopulos’ research focuses on community violence intervention and the effects of social determinants of health on access to surgical care.

“Nuclear Receptors, Enhancers,

and the Individual Predisposition to Metabolic Diseases”

Metabolic diseases, including diabetes and obesity, represent major challenges for modern societies. Their inexorable rise is due to environmental factors overlaying genetic variation in the form of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), whose functions in the non-coding genome are largely unknown. Nuclear receptors (NRs), which are the targets of hormones, metabolites, and 15-20% of prescribed drugs, function in the genome at DNA sequences that act as enhancers of gene transcription. SNPs that alter sequence-specific DNA binding of NRs can modulate their transcriptional activity, with consequences for metabolic health. Additional risk alleles alter the activity of enhancers controlling the expression of key metabolic genes and the development of metabolic liver disease. Together these findings demonstrate the importance of risk alleles at transcriptional enhancers whose genetic variation amplifies the risks of developing metabolic diseases.

Dr. Aditi Das is a Professor in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry at Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech). Her research explores lipid biochemistry, enzymology, and drug metabolism, with a focus on bioactive metabolites and their roles in inflammation and neurodegenerative diseases. She earned her Ph.D. in chemistry from Princeton University, specializing in functional protein design, followed by postdoctoral research utilizing biophysical tools to study membrane proteins in Nanodiscs. Dr. Das has made significant contributions to understanding lipid metabolizing cytochrome P450 enzymes and their role in lipid oxidation, leading to advances in drug discovery and biomedical applications. Her work has been widely published in high-impact journals, and she has received numerous grants and awards. Her national accolades include the NIH R35 Outstanding Researcher Award, Eicosanoid Society Young investigator award, AHA- Scientist development award, the E.L.R. Stokstad Award, and the Mary Swartz Rose Young Investigator Award from the American Society for Nutrition. Beyond her research, she serves on the Editorial Advisory Boards of Molecular Pharmacology, Prostaglandin, and other lipid mediators. Through her work, Dr. Das strives to advance the fields of lipid biochemistry and cannabinoid metabolism, translating fundamental science into real-world applications for human health.

At the CCTSI, we believe that one of the best ways to increase support for science is to empower researchers with the skills to communicate what it is they do and why it is important—to a variety of non-science audiences.

This workshop series provides an overview of why and how to engage the public—everyone from reporters to your neighbor—and even with the world on social media. Before each interactive workshop session, you will set yourself up for success through brief readings, a video or two to view, and a mini assignment. Researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, in partnership with USAging and ADVC, are using a rigorous difference-in-difference design to compare vaccination rates across U.S. regions and examine the impact of ADVC’s local partnerships and community outreach strategies. The study analyzes vaccination rates by race and ethnicity to uncover which activities and partnerships are most effective in reaching historically underserved communities.

We will be joined by Dr. Gregory Maassen, whose documentary 'Only Lazy Americans E-Bike' has raised nationwide attention to the role of exercise in neuropathy and to neuropathy research. Dr. Maassen will discuss his journey with neuropathy and the making of the film. Dr. Vera Fridman, Associate Professor and Director of the University of Colorado Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) Center of Excellence, and Dr. Ahmet Hoke, Professor and Director of the Merkin Peripheral Neuropathy and Nerve Regeneration Center at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, will highlight ongoing neuropathy research at the University of Colorado and Johns Hopkins University.

The event will conclude with a Q&A discussion regarding neuropathy, the role of exercise, and future directions in expanding neuropathy research and awareness.

This live event is free to attend and will include light refreshments. All attendees will be invited to watch 'Only Lazy Americans E-Bike' ahead of the discussion.

To be successful, primary care providers must become adept at understanding and advocating for the whole health of their patients. From integrating behavioral health support in primary care settings to supporting healthy food and housing, Dr. Levine has long been a proponent of changing primary care and social structures to support healthier outcomes.

In leading the state of Pennsylvania’s COVID-19 response, Dr. Levine saw the impacts of health disparities, as well as the critical role primary care physicians played in responding to the pandemic. Later, as assistant secretary for health at HHS, she championed health care access and equitable responses to emerging public health threats.

This event is part of the Farley Health Policy Center lecture series and is co-sponsored by the Department of Family Medicine and the Public Health Ethics & Law Program.

About the Speaker: Admiral Rachel Levine, M.D. served as the 17th Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and led the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. Prior to Dr. Levine’s federal service, she served as Secretary of Health and Physician General in Pennsylvania where she led the state’s response to the acute phase of COVID-19 and the opioid epidemic. She entered public service in 2015 after a career in academic medicine including as professor of pediatrics and psychiatry at the Penn State College of Medicine. She completed her residency and fellowship at Mt. Sinai, earned her M.D. at Tulane University, and completed her undergraduate work at Harvard College.  

She is a fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine, and Academy for Eating Disorders and served as President of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials. 

Dr. Levine has been named by USA Today as one of their 2022 Women of the Year, by Time Magazine to their inaugural list of the 100 most influential climate leaders in the world, and she is a member of the National Academy of Medicine.

We are a patient advocacy/advisory council comprised of cancer survivors, family members, and caregivers from across Colorado. COE-CARES is sponsored by the CU Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, and aims to help investigators in the basic sciences, clinical, translational, and population based research areas who seek input from community members as advisors or advocates for new grants and/or on-going research studies.

The Youth Wellness Hub brings together three evidence-informed social policy strategies: community governance, public health education campaigns, and coordinated service networks supported by fiscal blending.

Using a mixed-methods design, the research team assessed the model’s feasibility in Tacoma, Washington. The study included surveys and interviews with community organizations, as well as a network analysis of participating organizations.

The project was led by the University of Washington in partnership with the Excelsior Center for Health and Wellness, the Safe Streets Coalition, and other local collaborators.

Who are we?

We are a patient advocacy/advisory council comprised of cancer survivors, family members, and caregivers from across Colorado. COE-CARES is sponsored by the CU Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, and aims to help investigators in the basic sciences, clinical, translational, and population based research areas who seek input from community members as advisors or advocates for new grants and/or on-going research studies.

Join experts Patricia Huguelet, MD, and Lauryn Roth, MD, as they discuss the impacts of dysmenorrhea on adolescent quality of life, discuss treatment options, and address when a higher level of care may be necessary.

Who are we?

We are a patient advocacy/advisory council comprised of cancer survivors, family members, and caregivers from across Colorado. COE-CARES is sponsored by the CU Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, and aims to help investigators in the basic sciences, clinical, translational, and population based research areas who seek input from community members as advisors or advocates for new grants and/or on-going research studies.

Come to the 14th Annual CU-CSU Summit, on Thursday, August 13, 2026. The conference will take place in the Elliman Conference Center in the Anschutz Health Sciences Building at CU Anschutz.

This daylong academic conference will include presentations on exciting translational research approaches to brain health, chronic disease, neuroimmunology, and more. Presenters will hail from a diversity of departments and disciplines across the state of Colorado. The goal of the CU-CSU Summit is to foster new collaborations across all CCTSI-affiliated campuses (CU Anschutz, CU Boulder, CU Denver and Colorado State University) and across different research areas.

Early stage investigators and trainees are encouraged to attend along with senior scientists and faculty.

This talk will discuss several key steps in the theranostic clinical trial workflow:

(i) Imaging phase: Patients receive a low-dose radiotracer that targets a specific oncoprotein.
(ii) Selection phase: If the PET scan shows target uptake (oncotarget positive), the patient is enrolled in the therapeutic phase.
(iii) Therapeutic phase: The same targeting molecule is paired with a higher-energy, cell-killing radioisotope or radioseed.

The discussion will also highlight unique aspects of theranostic trials, including patient selection, dosimetry optimization, collection and handling of radioactive blood for pharmacokinetic analysis, and potential toxicities.

More than 57 partners joined forces to make sure families with babies and young children get the care, connection, and encouragement they need. Home-visiting supports maternal health, and boosts everything from infant mental health to early development. Yet many families don’t even know these free services exist. The Coalition stepped in to shine a light on home-visiting and to remind families that those early years of bonding and attachment are powerful, precious, and worth supporting. The support extends to prenatal and postpartum care, housing, jobs, food, diapers, formula, breastfeeding, childcare, and early intervention for all.

Linda S. Cook, PhD:
Dr. Cook received her PhD in epidemiology from the University of Washington in Seattle and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer epidemiology at Fred Hutch Cancer Center in Seattle. She is a professor of epidemiology at the Colorado School of Public Health in Aurora and associate director for population sciences at the University of Colorado Cancer Center in Aurora.

For more than 30 years, Dr. Cook has had extensive experience as a population-based cancer epidemiologist, leading multisite projects, de novo biospecimen collection, de novo medical record and EHR data extraction, detailed surveys and interviews, and participating in collaborative research groups such as the Ovarian Cancer Association Consortium, the Ovarian Tumor Tissue Analysis Consortium, the Epidemiology of Endometrial Cancer Consortium, and the NCI Cancer Center Cessation Initiative.

Dr. Cook is the MPI/PD of the NCI Cancer Screening Research Network: Accrual, Enrollment, and Screening Sites Hub, known as Improving Strategies for Cancer Reduction Through Early Detection and Engagement (I-SCREEN) (NCI 1 UG1 CA286941). The I-SCREEN Hub is participating in the Vanguard study, a national randomized controlled trial testing multicancer detection tests.

Victoria Nuanes, CCRC:
Victoria Nuanes earned her bachelor’s degree in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology from the University of Colorado Boulder. Inspired after taking a “Biology of a Cancer Cell” course, she has dedicated her career to contributing to the field of oncology clinical research.

Over the past eight years at the CU Cancer Center, Nuanes has held roles as a clinical research coordinator, clinical research supervisor, and, most recently, program manager for the Cancer Screening Research Network. Working in collaboration with investigators and research staff, she has successfully onboarded and opened five recruiting sites for the CSRN’s pilot Vanguard study.

She enjoys working in cross-functional settings, establishing logical process flows, and serving as a trial matter expert. She strongly believes increased cancer screening and preventive measures are key to fighting cancer. Outside of work, she enjoys fishing, spending time with her husband and dog, and caring for her houseplants.

This multisector collaboration brings together several systems, including a local food bank, a Medicaid-supported community health worker HUB, Mom’s First (supported by public health), and academic researchers. The study evaluates how coordinated support across these partners can improve maternal health and household food access.

The two-group intervention S4A study compares:

Medically tailored groceries, customized to each household’s dietary needs and preferences and delivered every other week, and$30 in cash, distributed every other week via CashApp.Outcomes from these two approaches will be compared with each other and with a concurrent matched sample drawn from local Medicaid data. Key data collection points include baseline, 8 weeks after the intervention begins, at or near delivery, and 3 months postpartum.

This webinar will highlight the study design, implementation across community and health systems, and early insights into how food- and cash-based supports may influence maternal and household health during pregnancy and the postpartum period.

We are a patient advocacy/advisory council comprised of cancer survivors, family members, and caregivers from across Colorado. COE-CARES is sponsored by the CU Cancer Center’s Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, and aims to help investigators in the basic sciences, clinical, translational, and population based research areas who seek input from community members as advisors or advocates for new grants and/or on-going research studies.

As the S4A program sunsets on December 31, this webinar offers a final look at the program’s impact and contributions. Through 54 funded studies and more than 1,000 proposals submitted across nine Calls for Proposals, S4A research has explored innovative systems alignment mechanisms -- processes designed to coordinate and integrate medical, social, and public health systems to improve population health and advance equity. These studies have shed light on system-level drivers of cross-sector collaboration and the innovations that make alignment possible.

Join S4A Director Dr. Glen Mays for a reflective conversation on the program’s final results, key insights, and lasting lessons. This webinar will highlight what the field has learned about systems alignment, what remains challenging, and how this body of work can inform future efforts to build more equitable, collaborative systems that support health for all.
