Join us for an engaging lecture exploring the rich ethnographic and historical roots of African-American midwifery as part of a broader cultural worldview and healing tradition. The presentation will examine how midwifery thrived within the southern folk and agrarian ethos, shaping communal, kinship, and feminine social networks. We will discuss how public health regulations between 1920–1940 became a tool for systemic oppression, nearly erasing the tradition in favor of the Progressive Era’s emphasis on science, secularism, and didactic knowledge. Discover the resilience and significance of African-American midwifery and its lasting impact on health and healing practices.
