Learning Objectives:

Participants will understand the unique advantages of conversation analysis (compared to other methods), especially for the study of healthcare interaction.

Participants will better understand how conversation analysis can be applied to healthcare interaction through experiencing several case studies.

Participants will better understand how conversation analysis can be mixed with parametric-statistical methods to test associations between patterns of interaction and outcomes.

This presentation briefly outlines the unique advantages of the qualitative method of conversation analysis (compared to other methods), especially for the study of healthcare interaction. Conversation analysis is often applied to improve healthcare outcomes, which tends to involve mixing it with experimental research designs and testing its findings with parametric statistics. Two case studies of this are reviewed, one involving agenda setting in adult primary care (dealing the 'problem' of patients' unmet concerns), and the other involving recommending treatment for viral URIs in pediatric care (dealing with 'problems' associated with not prescribing antibiotics, such as parent resistance and lack of satisfaction).
