“Reconsidering Genetic Mechanisms
of Inborn Errors of Immunity”
There are ~550 known inborn errors of immunity (IEI), monogenic diseases of the immune system that cause immunodeficiency and immune dysregulation. Despite the tremendous advances that have been made using next-generation sequencing, at least 70% of patients with suspected IEI remain undiagnosed, suggesting that current genomic sequencing and analysis strategies are not sufficient. The Cooper lab is interested in novel genetic mechanisms of IEI including somatic mosaicism and structural variants that can be difficult to detect by exome and genome sequencing.
