The existential therapist, Viktor Frankl (the author of Man’s Search for Meaning), posited that meaning is a central part of being human, and that people have a will or drive towards meaning. However, it raises the questions of what is meaning and how do we live meaningfully? Philosophers have pondered these questions for millennia, and more recently, psychotherapists and positive psychology researchers have joined the effort. Despite making progress, there still is no comprehensive model of meaning. This lecture will begin by integrating the different aspects of meaning into a balanced model. The model will then be used as a framework to explore how people can find meaning in their lives both at work and outside of it. Finally, there will be suggestions for how medical leadership can create a meaningful work environment for their providers and staff.
