Exploring the Emotional Impact of Gestational Diabetes on American Indian Women’s Pregnancy Experience

Dr. Shondra McCage will be presenting on her dissertation work – a descriptive study using a mixed methods approach to better understand the impact of gestational diabetes on Native women.

Shondra McCage, PhD, MPH (Chickasaw and Mississippi Choctaw)

Dr. McCage is a Chickasaw tribal member and works for the Chickasaw Nation Department of Health’s (CNDH) Research and Public Health division. She has a bachelor’s degree in exercise science from East Central University and a master’s in public health in health promotion sciences from the University of Oklahoma Health Science Center’s (OUHSC) Hudson College of Public Health. She recently completed her doctoral dissertation defense at OUHSC’s Hudson College of Public Health in the Health Promotion Sciences department. 

Shondra worked in the CNDH’s diabetes program for over 23 years. During that time, she served in various roles as an exercise consultant, health promotion specialist, and clinic manager. She also participated in diabetes education and advocacy committees at the state and national levels including the National Diabetes Education Program, the American Diabetes Association, the Oklahoma Inter-Tribal Diabetes Coalition, and the Oklahoma Legislative Diabetes Caucus. She is also in her second 5-year term as an appointed commissioner for the Oklahoma Commission on the Status of Women.
