#bookclub EOHThe EOH Department is hosting our fall semester book club on Waste by Catherine Coleman Flowers. We welcome all CSPH community members who have an interest in the topics discussed by this book to come discuss their opinions on the matter in a socratic type discussion.
This book club will also have a special guest—Dr. Elizabeth Albright of Duke University—who works closely with the author, Ms. Catherine Coleman Flowers. For more background on their work:
A short video with Catherine Coleman Flowers and a Time article about her work and Lowndes County.
Summary of the book:
Too many people, especially the rural poor, lack an affordable means of disposing cleanly of the waste from their toilets. Flowers tells the story of systemic class, racial, and geographic prejudice that foster unacceptable conditions not just in Alabama, but across America, in Appalachia, central California, coastal Florida, Alaska, the urban Midwest, and on Native American reservations in the West.
