The Opioid Epidemic: How It Started, and How It’s Going
Susan Calcaterra, MD, MPH, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and Addiction Medicine. Dr. Calcaterra is the Director of the Addiction Medicine consultation service at the University of Colorado Hospital and is the Associate Director of the Addiction Medicine fellowship program at the University of Colorado. Clinically, Dr. Calcaterra practices hospital-based addiction medicine and hospital medicine at the University of Colorado Hospital. She is the PI on a NIDA K08 career development award which aims to understand barriers and facilitators to expanding hospital-based addiction treatment and to develop interventions to expand addiction treatment to hospitalized patients. Dr. Calcaterra is the Past President of the Society of General Internal Medicine Mountain West Region. Recently, she led a workgroup supported by the Society of Hospital Medicine to develop hospital-based opioid use disorder treatment guidelines informed by a literature review of existing guidelines. Additionally, she has published over 40 articles in peer-reviewed journals.
