Join the Farley Health Policy Center and Daniel E. Dawes, J.D., Senior Vice President of Global Health and Founding Dean of the School of Global Health at Meharry Medical College, for a lecture delving into his groundbreaking work on the political determinants of health. 

It’s long been clear that societal forces affect health, from neighborhood design to school quality to the selection of products on sale in our corner stores. The places where we live, work, learn, and play shape our health in ways far more powerful than what we experience in the doctor’s office. But what’s behind those forces?  

Dawes, a renowned scholar and attorney, will discuss the political determinants of health, exploring how relationships, resources, policies, and power structures exert enormous influence on our environments. In this lecture, he’ll discuss how the political determinants of health have exacerbated inequities in the U.S. and share ideas for more equitable policymaking and a healthier country.   

This event is part of the Farley Health Policy Center lecture series and co-sponsored by the Public Health Ethics & Law Program. 

About the Speaker: Daniel E. Dawes, J.D. is a widely respected healthcare and public health leader, health policy expert, educator, and researcher who serves as Senior Vice President of Global Health and Founding Dean of the School of Global Health at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. Prior to this, he served as Vice President and Executive Director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at Morehouse School of Medicine. He is the author of two groundbreaking health policy books, 150 Years of ObamaCare and The Political Determinants of Health, both published by Johns Hopkins University Press. 

Dean Dawes is an elected member of the National Academy of Medicine and an elected fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine. He served as an advisor to The White House on health equity initiatives, and as an appointed member of the CDC’s Advisory Committee to the Director and the NIH’s National Advisory Council for Nursing Research. He is a member of the board of trustees of Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, University of Nebraska Foundation, and Loma Linda University Health. 

Among his many achievements, he was an instrumental figure in developing and negotiating the Mental Health Parity Act, the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act, and an architect of the Affordable Care Act’s health equity-focused provisions, among other landmark federal policies.
