At the August 19, 2025 noon-1pm DFM Community Engagement Program Monthly Meeting (DFM-CEP-MM), we will learn about Mutual Aid with Kimberly Miller, a Mutual Aid Monday Advocate.

Mutual Aid Monday (MAM), a volunteer-powered mutual aid collective based in Denver.

MAM is composed of community members that care deeply for our neighbors experiencing homelessness and provide solidarity and support. Founded in November 2020 by Kelsang Virya, this grassroots network of people come together throughout the week to organize and prepare for a weekly community gathering with shared food, clothes, harm reduction items, toiletries, blankets, and other needed supplies.

Our guest speaker, Kimberly A. Miller, will focus on understanding the purpose, principles and practice of mutual aid and share the story of MAM. A brief overview of the talk will include:

  • The landscape of extreme income inequality, poverty, and homelessness in the US and Colorado
  • Homelessness in Denver-recent history, evolving and current situation
  • What is mutual aid?  Brief history and key concepts
  • MAM Overview: Who we are, what we do, and challenges we face
  • Relevance of mutual aid as caring community response to the inadequate federal, state, and local social safety net
  • Possible roles and opportunities for everyone including medical professionals (residents, students, faculty, postdocs, interns, trainees), staff, and community members to be involved in Denver mutual aid
  • Additional ways to support MAM
